About

Tom Whitehead
Glad you dropped by!

I’m Tom Whitehead, a practicing psychotherapist and the author of several books in the genre of popular science. I hold a Master’s degree in clinical psychology, and am credentialed in the state of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Supervisor (LPC-S). During these covid-19 times I am seeing clients only via Zoom video conference and phone. You are visiting my blog home, WhiteheadBooks.com.

My goal as a psychotherapist is to help my clients identify sticking points, and support them in moving on to a more satisfying life. My goal as an author is to cast light on human behavior – especially problematic behavior – by relating it to the behavior of our animal relatives.

I’m especially interested in addiction and addiction-like, out-of-control behaviors. If we look, we can see the roots of human addiction in the behavior of our animal cousins. All higher animals can under certain conditions fall into repetitive, stereotypical, non-productive patterns that prove resistant to change. Human addictions, whether or not they involve substances, seem to fit into this general category.

I deal with this theme in several of my books, including the one I’m currently writing. The working title is A Better Psychology: Understanding addictions and other rogue habits.
